Houston Humidity
If you've lived in Spring or the Woodlands areas, humidity is a huge part of your everyday life. After a long day, the last thing you want to do is return to a humid house. Below we give our best advice on fighting humidity in your home or business.
Controlling Humidity
The need for AC in your home actually comes from the need to control humidity. Essentially your home AC unit is one big dehumidifier. The way it works is that when your system stays on it removes the water vapor from the air and drains it outside away from your home. This means the longer the AC system remains on, the less humid it will be in your home or business. Now this doesn't mean you need to run your system 24/7 to eliminate all the humidity in the house. The recommended humidity in most homes should be between 50% and 55%.
Humidity Problems
We all know that humidity doesn't exactly feel great but here are some reasons why too high or too low humidity will be a problem:
Too High | Too Low |
---|---|
Mold and Bacteria Growth | Cause dry eyes, hair, and skin |
Damages the flooring and walls of your home | Warps walls, doors, and floors |
Damages the furniture in your home | More susceptible to getting sick |
Causes your allergies to act up |
Personal Tips
When trying to get rid of humidity here are a few tips that we recommend:
- Remove plants. When plants release carbon dioxide into the air they also release small water vapor that adds moisture to the air. This moisture adds to the humidity index inside, so if you have too many plants indoors it may increase the humidity level. This means if you have indoor plants that can survive this Texas heat you may consider moving them outside.
- Increase Ventilation. By turning on fans in the house you are able to circulate air properly and cause it to be less humid. Turning on exhaust fans can also be beneficial when cooking, especially when boiling water to avoid the steam from getting in the air.
- Get Regular checkups. By having your AC system regularly checked, you ensure that the system is running at peak performance and you can address any indoor air quality issues with your technician. If your AC is struggling without regular maintenance, then you will too with humidity issues.
